It’s Ugly for Yanks as Team Sweats Out Another Loss

BRONX, NEW YORK, June 21- It was a hot and ugly outing for the Yankees yesterday as the 10-5 loss to the Braves left fans simmering. 

Atlanta hit four home runs off the Yanks.

In addition to the home run rally, Yankee players Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher were steamed at the home plate umpire’s calls. In two incidents the Yankee sluggers let their emotions boil over with the ump.

Summer (Con) Jobs

BRONX, NEW YORK, June 20- It’s summer time and while most teens are getting part-time burger flipping jobs for extra cash, cops say a pair of teens instead are ripping people off. 

Investigators said the pair robbed a mother’s purse while she was caring for her baby. At around 8 p.m. on May 20, a 25-year-old woman was walking down the stairs of the subway platform of the D line subway train at 196th Street and the Grand Concourse. The pair approached the woman carrying her child’s stroller. While the girl distracted her, the boy stole the woman’s purse which was draped over the baby’s stroller.

The pair struck again at around 7 p.m. on May 28. Inside the lobby of 2770 Briggs Avenue the pair approached a 47-year-old woman. This time the female thief snatched the chain off the woman’s neck and the pair fled. 

Police released surveillance video from the subway robbery. The female suspect is Hispanic, 15 to 17 years of age. She has blond and red hair, light skin and was seen wearing a pink and peach shirt and capri pants. Her accomplice is a black male between the ages of 15 and 17. He has a dark complexion, short black hair and was seen wearing a black T-shirt and jeans.

Streaking Ends for Yankees

Nothing seemed to go right for the Yanks as their 10-game win streak came to an end last night with a 4-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves. 

Two runners were thrown out at the plate. A ground ball hit off Mark Teixeira’s heel. 

The question now is whether the loss was just a bad night or the beginning of problems for the Yankees.

New Woodlawn Van Service

In 2010 when the MTA cut back service on the BX34 bus the residents of Woodlawn were the ones who had no weekend bus service. Ms. Christine Sheridan (President of the Woodlawn Taxpayers Association) with other residents of Woodlawn asked State Senator Jeff Klein if he could do anything to restore the BX34 weekend service. Unable to restore the weekend BX 34 service Senator Klein did the next best thing by working with New York City TLC Commissioner David Yassky to provide a licensed van service from the Dorcel Edenwald Bus Service for the lost weekend BX34 bus service. Mr. Carl Gromes (owner of the van service) said that his company came about when the MTA cut out the old BX14 bus route, and his company has flourished since then. He added that he is happy to service the Woodlawn community in a similar situation. The van service will only be in effect on weekends from 9 AM to 9 PM and cost $2.00. Schedules of the new weekend van service will be posted in local Woodlawn businesses.







Last Saturday was the date of the Mable Hill Clean Up put together by Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez and Community Board #8's Environmental and Sanitation Committee. Mr. Tony Edwards of Councilman Rodriguez's office (who coordinated the clean up) told us “The Marble Hill area just needs a little clean up.” Dozens of people showed up to form several teams of people that were provided with brooms, rakes, shovels gloves, and trash bags to make the Marble Hill area a little cleaner. This is done all through out the community board area at different times we were told, as in May the Parks Committee did a similar clean up in one of the community boards parks by the Jerome Park Reservoir.







If you travel by car on Broadway north by West 242nd Street you will see something new at the corner if you are planning to make a left turn from Broadway. While you were able to make a left turn from Broadway to West 242nd Street at any time the light was green, there is now a red turning arrow to prevent a left turn while southbound traffic goes through the intersection. Traffic backed up at this intersection due to the Westchester buses that were parked in the bus stop waiting for their scheduled time to start so the # 9 city bus had to double park often to let passengers off at the bus stop. This left only one lane of traffic to flow north on Broadway which was the turning lane. Now that cars have to wait for the green turning arrow this intersection has become gridlocked at times. Now that summer is here we wonder just how bad the gridlock will get with all the park goers that use Broadway.

Cedric Meets Grandi Man

The Entertainer meets the Grandi Man: Yesterday Cedric the Entertainer watched Yankees batting practice at Yankee Stadium prior to the team’s 7:05 p.m. game vs. Atlanta. While in the Bronx, Cedric participated in a longtime Yankee Stadium tradition by heading out to the Bleachers to help lead “Roll Call” with the “Bleacher Creatures,” before watching the game in the stands. Here he poses with Yankee Slugger Curtis Granderson.

Cedric is in New York to promote his new TV Land sitcom “The Soul Man.”

Bronx Chamber, Hutchinson Metro Center Host Job Fair 

The Bronx Chamber of Commerce hosted a New York Job Fair on June 7 at its headquarters at the Hutchinson Metro Center. On-site interviews for a variety of jobs requiring a variety of skill levels were offered. Hundreds of people attended the event. NYPD and FDNY had booths along with many other Bronx businesses. The Job Fair was one of 11 to be held by New York State throughout the month of June. Rangel’s Challenger Shines

Congressional Candidate Brings Leadership Qualities to Race

BRONX, NEW YORK, June 18- No stranger to politics, Clyde Williams has worked under both President Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and has now set his sights on the 13 Congressional District, currently held by Charles Rangel.

Williams recently took time out from his busy campaign schedule to sit down to discuss his background, experience and what he hopes to accomplish for the newly redrawn district that now includes parts of the Bronx, if elected.

Williams, 49, was born and raised in Washington, DC., and is the former head of the Democratic National Committee as well as being the Deputy Chief of Staff at the Department of Agriculture, overseeing 100,000 employees and an $18 million annual budget.

Williams explained, "I'm the only person who's running against Congressman Rangel who's actually worked in Washington, DC... I'm the only person who can hit the ground tomorrow and actually do something to bring resources to this Congressional District."

On Congressman Rangel, Williams politely stated, "I respect the Congressman, but I think it's time for new leadership, it's time for a change."

Williams continued, "The two major people I'm running against, they both represent the political establishment, they represent the political machine that is New York... they haven't even talked about issues yet."

On those issues, Williams states, "You have a huge health care disparity that exists in this community, same thing with education... and unemployment. Our unemployment is almost twice the national average."

Williams is married to his wife Mona, whom he actually met in the, "Situation room," at the White House, the couple have two small children and reside in Harlem.

Anthony Rivieccio, Director of the Northwest Bronx Democrats, has thrown his support behind Williams as he has been meeting voters in Bedford Park, Norwood and Van Cortland Village.

Rivieccio stated, "We support Clyde Williams because we are looking for an independent, non-house Democrat. I think in the Bronx he has a good chance of winning."

Primary Day is slated for Tuesday, June 26.
